Who thought one could stay warm and make a fashion statement with paper bags? Oh! New York-based designer Aki Goto did. Hence she has launched a jacket that is made from discarded paper bags. United Bamboo is selling it online, according to madamenoire.com.
The unisex jacket, priced at $480, is made using brown paper bags glued onto a vintage size 8 jacket and coated with varnish and covered with duct tape. The jacket is extremely tattered and ragged and looks like it might fall apart any moment. And what’s even worse is that the duct tape is visible on the outside, which is very ugly and looks like tin foil.
The paper bag jacket has a wet look from an excess of glue and varnish, is creased and in shreds as if someone just pulled it off from its hemlines.
Looking at the paper bag jacket, we cannot help but think of the Jill Sander handbag that made news in August. The handbag which was a simple-looking brown paper bag was priced at a whopping $290. True that the Jill Sander handbag was just an overpriced paper bag but at least it didn’t look like it’s going to crumble the next moment. Looks like paper bags are the new popular ‘fabric’.
While we are not exactly in love with the paper bag jacket, it has garnered mixed feelings among fashion-lovers. Styleite.com wrote, “We don’t hate the concept - in fact, we could see kooky couture designer Maison Martin Margiela making something like this work in a runway show. But between the sawed-off sleeves, the peeling seams and the creased, wet-looking material, we can’t help but think that the jacket appears to be rotting right there on the model’s back.”
“Everyone has their own idea about what looks good, and United Bamboo has taken the grungy vibe to the next level,” says diyfashion.com.
