We can only wish that skincare were black and white, but it isn't. People have different skin types; as such, there's no one-size-fits-all routine. Additionally, we also have to take into consideration that we all live in places with different seasons. This is why it's important to adjust our skin care needs depending on this factor, since each season poses a different challenge. Changes in weather are beyond our control, so it's our responsibility to make some adjustments for the sake of our skin's health.
Spring – Renewal and Allergy Protection
Leaving the winter season behind could only mean one thing: dry and blotchy skin. Recovery is the primary concern when spring comes, especially since cooler temperatures tend to make our faces crack and lose moisture. It makes our face look dull and lifeless. Going back to your standard skin routine is acceptable; however, transitioning from winter to spring skin care requires lighter moisturizers as humidity rises. Additionally, be mindful of the possibility of seasonal allergies that might trigger your skin's sensitivity.
Summer – Sun Safety and Oil Control
Going on outdoor adventures is the best thing about summer. We head to the mountains or the beach to get the most out of the sunshine. Unfortunately, there's a high chance we'll get too much sun exposure and get that dreaded sunburn. Skip using a retinoid if you spend more time outside than inside. Getting a broad-spectrum SPF is already given, but aside from that, be sure to prep your skin thoroughly by applying water-based products. Aloe vera is a great option since it has cooling properties that can help rejuvenate our skin. If you still want to wear makeup over your sunscreen, select lightweight products with SPF to manage sweat and oil control.
Autumn/Fall – Repair and Transition
The temperature starts to drop the minute the autumn season comes knocking at our doors. Sunny days will be scarcer, and cooler air will dry your skin if unprotected. Start by shifting to richer moisturizers as the weather drops, and consider getting a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells due to summer damage.
Winter – Deep Hydration and Barrier Care
It's time to bring out the best of your skin care products once the winter season officially sets in. Dehydration is your worst enemy as it strips our skin of moisture that may lead to painful cracks (not just on the lips, too!) Amp up the hydration, particularly in spots that are frequently exposed to the cold. An emollient paired with a rich moisturizer serves as a good base for winter skin care. Take care of your other body parts, too, by lathering a rich lotion, preferably with components like shea butter or even beeswax. Wearing an overnight mask will also help prep your skin to become extra moisturized before you head outdoors in the morning.
Remember, you don't have to go crazy with your skin care routine or go out of your way to purchase brand-new products that might only do more harm than good if used during the incorrect season. Consistency is key in every routine, coupled with seasonal awareness. On top of everything else, don't forget to hydrate!
