Come February 2013 and Rotterdam will get its dose of Jean Paul Gaultier fashion through an exhibition “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk”.

The first international exhibition of the renowned French dressmaker aims to provide a spectacular view of its broad and distinctive work.

Produced by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and in collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier, the show is expected to bring to life the world of Gaultier, presenting the visitors with a unique opportunity to gain access to high fashion, catwalk and movie costumes.

The exhibition that is scheduled for Feb. 10 to May 12 will feature over 140 original creations from the designer’s couture collections, as well as his ready-to-go designs ranging from the early 70s to the present. The Netherlands will see most of the pieces for the first time, though they have been worn by stars like Madonna and Lady Gaga earlier. The collection to be showcased takes its inspiration from countries like Africa, India, Russia, Mexico and many more.

The haute couture designer of French descent had been a creative designer at Hermes from 2003 to 2010 and has also worked with Pierre Cardin. Gaultier has never received formal training as a designer, but started sketching designs at a very young age. He sold his designs to famous couture stylists and his first individual collection was released in 1976. Since then, the designer hasn’t looked back.

Gaultier’s collection includes a range of clothing and beauty items, as well as a number of fragrances. The designer has been in the industry for the last 35 years and has been patronized by celebrities like Dita Von Teese, Malin Ackerman, Beyonce, Gwen Steffani, Elle Macpherson and many more.

Gaultier’s collection at the Paris Couture Week in July stunned the audience, according to a report by The Daily Mail. Its quirky and elaborate designs were not only detailed and intricate, but also extremely distinctive and made with a lot of effort and thought.

The exhibition will be held at Kunsthal Rotterdam, which is one of the most popular exhibition halls. It is known for showcasing culture with cutting-edge art, design and photography.
