During the procedure then, hyaluronic acid or a piece of cartilage is inserted into the upper ear to make it look plumper and visible, as per Dr. Jennie Liu.
"Aside from the lifting effect, it actually fans out your ear and that creates a smaller face because in Asia the trend is all about having a smaller face,” she explained.
Although it has a flattering result, experts are warning patients about its possible risks, and, stating that they do not recommend it.
"In my opinion, doing filler in the upper and lateral aspect of the ear is extremely risky and I personally would never recommend this for my patients," stated Dr. Deepak Dugar, a Beverly Hills-based surgeon.
One of its major risks is having a "cauliflower ear," where the ears are permanently misshapen and swollen due to blood clots or fluid accumulation under the skin.
But if it's not inevitable, Dr. Dugar suggests doing it to the lower earlobe which is effective in looking younger without wrinkly or saggy look.
