We have always fancied the vintage styles of Scarlett O'Hara from "Gone with the Wind" and Dorothy's cute blue-and-white tunic dress from "Wizard of Oz". Now is the chance to own it, though you would have to shell out some big bucks for it. The iconic blue-and-white dress donned by Judy Garland as Dorothy in the 1939 film "Wizard of Oz" is all set to go under the hammer.
The dress is being put on auction by an unidentified couple in New York who claim to have bought the dress in 1981 for about $2,000, according to nydailynews.com. The husband is said to have purchased the dress for his wife.
The auction will be conducted by Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills and the vintage dress is expected to fetch at least a half-million dollars, the auction house told nydailynews.com
The dress consists of a white puff-sleeved blouse and a white-and-blue checkered tunic dress. The dress has been known to symbolize the "American grit, glamour and virtue."
"When we picked it up from their house in New York, there were some tears. It was quite an emotional experience for them," company founder Darren Julien was quoted as saying by the Daily News. "They've lived with it in their residence without much security for the last 30 years, and when they realized how much it's worth today, it became a concern. They're hoping it ends up in a museum or with a collector who can really take care of it," he added.
"Wizard of Oz" is a film adaptation of a classic novel that goes by the same name. After the film released, its costumes have been a regular feature in Halloween parties worldwide.
Other Hollywood memorabilia that are up for bidding on the same day are the white strapless Edith Head gown worn by Elizabeth Taylor in "A Place in the Sun" and a Cecil Beaton triptych of Marilyn Monroe, which hung in Monroe's New York apartment.
The dress also carries a handwritten inscription on the garment tag with Garland's name on it, according to stylebistro.com. So if you want to go vintage at a Halloween party with the Dorothy dress, try your luck at Julien's auction Nov. 9.
