Nail splits can result from various factors such as nail biting, excess moisture, injury, psoriasis, or nutrient deficiencies. Common in women and older individuals, these splits can be vertical or horizontal and may indicate underlying health issues like fungal infections, aging, or pregnancy-related nutrient deficiencies. So, before trying any home remedy, consulting your healthcare professional is essential. 

On the other hand, if your nail splits stem from brittle nails, there are some DIY recipes you can use to help heal your nail splits.

Diluted Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a great natural remedy for strengthening nails. Packed with micronutrients like calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium, ACV nourishes the nail bed and strengthens the nail plate. Its acetic acid and malic acid content also act as antibacterial and antifungal agents, helping prevent nail infections. 

DIY Recipe: Dilute ACV with water, soak your nails for a few minutes, and gently push back cuticles. To see optimal results, experts suggest doing the soak daily for seven consecutive days.

Warm Sea Salt Water

Sea salt is a natural remedy for strengthening nails and softening cuticles. Rich in minerals, sea salt improves nail health overall. 

DIY Recipe: Dissolve a tablespoon of sea salt in a cup of warm water and soak your fingertips for 15 to 20 minutes daily or every other day. This simple soak can help improve the strength and health of your nails.

Coconut Oil Soak

Coconut oil is a fantastic option for strengthening and nourishing your nails. Rich in healthy fatty acids, it promotes growth and moisturizes nails deeply. Massaging coconut oil onto your nails not only strengthens them but also improves blood circulation, leading to healthier-looking nails. 

DIY Recipe: Warm one or two tablespoons of coconut oil and soak your nails for at least three minutes, then massage for four to six minutes up to three times a day.

Tea Tree and Vitamin E

Tea tree oil is a powerful antiseptic that can keep your nails bacteria-free and treat infections. When used with a moisturizing oil, it helps maintain clean, infection-free nails. 

DIY Recipe: Dilute tea tree oil with vitamin E oil, massage onto nails, wait 30 minutes, then wash with lukewarm water and moisturize. Repeat twice a month for best results.

Tomato and Rosemary Dip

Tomato juice is a natural remedy for strengthening nails, thanks to its rich antioxidant and protein content. This treatment can help heal brittle nails and improve their texture.

DIY Recipe: Combining two drops of rosemary oil with two tablespoons of tomato juice creates a healing soak. Simply dip your nails in the solution for ten minutes and then wash with water.
