Sunday, Sept. 23, was probably a day that won’t be forgotten soon. “Kickin’ Cancer with Style”, a local fashion show, was hosted at Johnny Ringo’s in Midtown, Fla., to highlight the survivors of breast cancer and talk about their journey. The show featured 22 cancer survivors from the age group of 30-70 years.

It was a day that would bring back memories of the journey but also make one proud for successfully battling the disease. “As I was walking, I got a little choked up,” says Jane Dwyer, who modeled a belted taupe maxi dress, to tallahassee.com.

Dwyer, a breast cancer survivor, told the site that there is life after cancer, and that part of life is different and much more vibrant because of what one has gone through. Dwyer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and underwent a surgery and 33 doses of radiation. She is now is in remission. A cancer survivor tends to enjoy the smaller things in life which they ignored before.

“My mom is a 25-year survivor,” says Sarah Brown, event organizer and chairwoman for Leon County’s “Making Strides against Breast Cancer” 5K walk. “I wanted to bring a lot of focus towards survivors during my time as event chair,” the site quoted Brown as saying.

To support the event, dresses, accessories, purses and boots were provided by four local boutiques. The participants got their hair and nails done and enjoyed the day, while giving out a strong message of sisterhood among the breast cancer survivors.

The show was part of the many initiatives taken to raise awareness and money for “Making Strides against Breast Cancer”, which benefits the American Cancer Society.

Not just the American Cancer Society, a number of Hollywood celebs these days come out in the open to tell their story, providing inspiration for other women to battle the disease. “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon, a survivor, told her story to inspire women and now serves as an ambassador for Susan G Komen for the Cure. Other celebs like Sheryl Crow, Kylie Minogue, Christina Applegate and others have not just survived the critical disease, but also told their stories to help other women.

The fashion show “Kickin’ Cancer with Style” leads to the “Making Strides against Breast Cancer” 5K Walk Oct. 21 at 1 p.m., at the SouthWood Town Center.
