Benefits of coconut oil on hair

Protein is the main component of hair. The better we prevent protein loss, the healthier our hair could be. Still, even our daily routine, such as washing and styling, can strip our hair off some of its precious protein.

Coconut oil is known to be rich in lauric acid, which helps protect hair from protein loss. It could penetrate deep into the hair shaft, thus preventing the absorption of too much water. Water is a contributor to hair damage and dryness. Coconut oil's ability to minimize protein loss is most evident when used as a grooming product before or after washing.

Ways to use coconut oil

Here are simple ways that you can use coconut oil on hair.

For Pre-washing

You can apply coconut oil before shampooing. Coconut oil will help prevent the hair from taking in too much water. For best results, apply coconut oil 15 to 30 minutes before taking a shower. Apply it on the ends and midsection of your hair.

For hair conditioning

You can use coconut oil to help strengthen the hair shaft and minimize hair breakage. Coconut oil is ideal as a hair conditioner or in addition to your usual conditioning product. First, you would want to warm it up a bit.

Take a small amount and then rub it between your palms then run it through your hair. Make sure that you avoid the scalp area as it can make your hair too greasy and heavy. You can then comb it through and blow-dry as usual.

For hairstyling

To use coconut oil as a styling agent, simply apply the oil and massage your hair from the ends. Again try to avoid the scalp. The coconut oil will help tame those frizz and fly-aways. Also, if you have curly or wavy hair, it will also enhance that.

As hair mask

Coconut oil is also great as hair treatment for damaged or extremely dry hair. First, you have to warm the coconut oil. Then, apply the oil on your hair starting at the midsection and work your way down to the ends. You can do this before you hit the sack and then leave it on overnight. Or you can apply it before shampooing. Just leave the coconut oil on for about 30 minutes and then shampoo and condition as normal.

Just remember to start with small amount to avoid buildup. Also, completely washing away the excess oil may require shampooing a second time.

Ultimately, using coconut oil on hair can help you grow hair longer and healthier. By preventing protein loss, you benefit from reduced breakage plus protection from damage caused by constant exposure to the sun and wind.
