Why do lips get chapped? Why are my lips so dry when the temperature goes down? These are common questions we hear in the cooler months from autumn to winter.

First off, chapped lips can happen any time of the year, but our lips can dry out when it's not properly hydrated and there is not much moisture or humidity in the air -- as is the case during autumn and winter (and while onboard an airplane).

Apparently, since our lips don't have oil glands like our skin, they become more susceptible to cracking or chapping. While cold, dry air can cause chapped lips, it can happen when you're exposed to the sun often as well.
