After working on some Spanish comedies, Penelope Cruz has struck a serious note with the upcoming season of Ryan Murphy's "American Crime Story".

Season 3 of the popular FX crime series will feature the Spanish actress in the thrilling telltale chronicle of Italian designer Gianni Versace's murder. Cruz will be stepping into the shoes of none other than Gianni's sister Donatella Versace in the series.

The season titled "Versace" is poised to delve into the truth of the inexplicable murder of the Italian creative legend by Andrew Cunanan. While Venezuelan star Edgar Ramirez is ready to raise the temperature as Gianni Versace, Darren Criss has taken up the role of serial killer Cunanan who committed suicide eight days after the murder.

The story, inspired by Maureen Orth's "Vulgar Favors," has caught immediate attention with its gripping theme. And when Murphy is spinning the yarn, one never knows what surprise will come forth.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, London Spy fame Tom Rob Smith has penned the first two of the ten episodes. The cast will start filming in April and the new season will hit the television screens in early 2018.

"American Crime Story" made a brilliant start on FX bagging five Emmys with its first deliverance of the OJ Simpson murder trial. Hence after covering Hurricane "Katrina" in second season, Murphy has moved to a rather untouched story of the Versace's shocking death in 1997. Donatella, who took over the couturier's fashion legacy after his death, is of course going to be a character to watch out for.

The audience looking forward to Murphy's favorite Lady Gaga fitting perfectly in the role were obviously a bit disappointed. Entertainment Weekly stated Murphy admitted he would have loved to work with Lady Gaga as well, but was aware that their schedules would not match on this project. "When you're going to do a show like 'Versace', it's a five-month commitment, it's a very big show, we're shooting it all over the world," revealed Murphy. "So I just think with her schedule, I knew that it would never had worked. But I would love to work with her on something in the future."

However, Cruz has raised everyone's expectation levels as well. The Oscar winning actress is known for her versatility and charismatic presence on screen. Hence fans are all in for the fresh flavour that she may bring to the facet of Versace in the much-awaited murder mystery. Stay hooked for more updates on the same.
