After the recent uproar over "Tanorexic" New Jersey mom Patricia Krentcil accused of forcing her kid into a tanning salon gained national attention. New York state legislature moved on the bill banning anyone 16 years old and younger from getting the tanning treatment.

The Assembly members point to the growth of skin cancer rates as the need for the bill, having Patricia Krentcil garner national media attention about the issue didn't hurt.

"This lady has an addiction, obviously," said Assembly sponsor Harvey Weisenberg (D-Nassau). "The reality it is it became so obscene it did bring to view the ugliness of what this tanning can do to you."

According to the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from tanning beds poses a serious health risks of developing skin cancer. In 2009 International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) part of the World Health Organization concluded that tanning devices that emit UV ratiation are more dangers than perviously thought and moved the devices into the highest cancer risk category: "carcinogenic to humans."

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said the popularity of tanning salons has led to a 72% jump in incidences of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, from 1998 to 2008.

The bill is expected to be reviewed by the New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, according to the state spokesman.
