Foundering shoe brand Sperry Top-Sider paves it way to revival after being rediscovered by a new generation of shoppers.
New-England based shoe brand, Sperry Top-Sider enjoyed a decade of fame rising from being featured in countless John Huge movies and receiving favouring acclaim in "The Official Preppy Handbook". However, after a while the brand fell out of flavour and was soon becoming a forgotten name.
Craig Reingold, president of the Lexington-based Sperry said in an interview, "It was clearly a declining brand. That was when they were cheapening the product. They were using a lesser grade of leather. You can't do that." Things just got worse when the 90s arrived as no one in the company knew to market the brand properly.
However, the 2000s seem to have been favorable on the brand color as the designers started playing around with the look of their shoes and introduced new material and silhouettes. The final feather in the hat came when top designers put Sperry on the New York Fashion runways and the shoe brand managed to grab the attention of many. And then there was no looking back. Recently everyone from Blake Lively to Keane West has been seen sporting a Sperry.
The brand now has a store in New York's Fifth Avenue and has announced it will be selling accessories along with baggage in Spring 2013. Top designers Michelle Smith of label Milly will be working with the brand to create a collection of floral platforms for this summer. Other companies that have collaborated with Top-Sider in the recent past include Japanese street wear company A Bathing Ape, local outerwear company Penfield and California-based label Band of Outsiders (the label responsible for giving Sperry the much-required exposure).
