Lorde has explained why she retaliated when Diplo tweeted about Taylor Swift's behind, says NME.

The "Yellow Flicker Beat" singer has come in defense of country-turned-pop star Swift when DJ and music producer Diplo made fun of her lack of curves. Lorde shot back at Diplo, whose real name is Wesley Pentz, commenting on his "tiny penis."

Speaking to Fader magazine, Lorde said her comment was misinterpreted. "I think I often say things and realize that Americans hear what I say differently to how I hear it," she explained.

"I love Wes and he's a big brother to me and one of my first friends in the industry and part of having a friendship with someone like that is not letting them say stupid s**t," she added.

She explained that she replied to Diplo because she feels the need to speak out whenever she sees something amiss.

"Taylor's my friend as well, and I'm a girl, and if I see some weird body-shaming on my feed I'm going to be like, 'Hey man...'" she said. "We do still love each other, hopefully."

She also admitted that while she has recently been very vocal about her beliefs and stands in different societal issues, she used to keep a lot to herself.

"I wasn't always that type of person," she said. "I've been notoriously quiet my whole life, so it wasn't until I started to be able to run a board meeting and direct people in the way I wanted things to go that I gained confidence as a leader."

The whole Diplo-Lorde-Taylor Swift debacle ended when Diplo asked Lorde via Twitter if she was willing to accompany him to the premiere of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" in L.A., according to MTV. The tweet, however, has been deleted.

Diplo had previously made a remix of the eighteen-year-old singer's "Tennis Court." He also contributed to the soundtrack of "Mockingjay Part 1," which Lorde curated.

Meanwhile, the DJ-producer has yet to apologize to Swift for his remarks. Swift has also been silent about the whole issue.
