Ever wish you could design a fashion item for Kate Middleton? Several fashion students from De Montford University are in the race to doing exactly that.
The Duchess of Cambridge is set to accompany the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to the Leicester university as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebration. One lucky student will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to have the fashion icon wear shoes of their custom design. Professor Dominic Shellard, vice-Chancellor of the university, said it would be "a huge honour" for the designer selected. "When asked who their first commission was for at their first job interview they will be able to reply - the Duchess of Cambridge, the world's leading fashion icon."
One student and contestant, Becca Hunt, 20, described her inspiration in the design she is suggesting. "I think Kate always looks really elegant in what she wears so I went for 19th century, romantic chic and took inspiration from her engagement ring for the navy blue velvet of the shoe. I know she is on her feet all the time at events so if she chose my design I'd make sure there was a lot of padding to make them comfortable. I'm really nervous about meeting her, I hope she likes it."
Sam Sawkill, 27, used pink and black lace in his design. "Kate's shoes are usually simple and plain so I wanted to design something different," he said. "She should choose mine because I think they are the most interesting, but chic as well."
"I like unusual designs and recently made shoes out of plastic forks, although I don't think she would have liked those. They are definitely more Lady Gaga or Madonna than the Duchess," he continued.
Key Yeng Cheng, 22, a fashion student from Leicestershire, designed a unique lilac shoe. "It's so exciting. My family are very proud," she said.
Yet another student was inspired by her Taiwanese background when she designed her shoe.
"The concept comes from the year of the dragon and it's shape is inspired by a lantern," Mei Chun Lai, 21, said. "I wanted to show my background through my design."
