Showtime announced Wednesday that British comedian Steve Coogan is set to replace Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman in upcoming drama-comedy pilot "Happyish," Cinema Blend reported.

Coogan will play Thom Payne, a man who finds himself working under a wunderkind 25-year-old boss. The 44-year-old protagonist then starts to feel his age as his younger superior makes him feel outpaced using buzz words that were new and unfamiliar to him. This prompts his new search for happiness by catching up to the world around him.

Thom eventually questions whether his pursuit for happiness iis unnecessary and his outlook in life needed "rebranding." He will also explore whether his corporate headhunter is right by calling his quest a "low joy ceiling."

Coogan was offered the role following the death of the 46-year-old, "A Most Wanted Man" star due to toxic drug mixture in February, the New York Post reported.

Hoffman, 46, was reportedly found dead in his Manhattan West Village apartment and authorities said at the time that he died due to an "acute mixed drug intoxication, including heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines and amphetamine."

Hoffman had reportedly developed a drug addiction as a college student, but overcame it and remained clean after a period of more than 20 years. The actor relapsed in 2012 when he started taking heroin and prescription drugs. He spent 20 days in rehab in 2013 and claimed he had kicked the habit again.

"Happyish" is set to be produced by author and regular "This American Life" contributor Shalom Auslander. He will be joined by Ken Kwapis of "He's Just Not That Into You" and "The Office," who will direct the pilot episode.

In the official press release, "Happyish" was introduced as a "comedic, soul-searching examination of our pursuit of happiness," Deadline has learned.

Showtime will begin production of "Happyish" in December. Filming will be in New York City.
