Lillian Bassman died yesterday from natural causes at the age of 94, according to her son Eric Himmel- although she might try to convince you she is still 25.
She is a BK (Brooklyn) child born in 1917, who grew up to be considered one of the greatest fashion photographers. She is credited for promoting careers of Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, and Louis Faurer during her tenure at Harper's Bazaar from the late forties to the mid-sixties.
She once commented on her own photography"I wanted to present women in the way I felt about them ... Feminine, serene and elegant. It's a woman's point of view about other women."
She had lost interest in fashion and burned almost all 40 years of her work in the seventies. Later she found a forgotten trash bag of some of her work and ignited the fire again. Bassaman continued to work embracing new digital technology and Photoshop.
She once told WWD, "Everybody's fascinated with the idea of someone who is productive at my age. But I don't know where or how or who I would be if I weren't working. Plus, I'm convinced I'm really 25."
