To kick off NYC Fashion Week 2012, democratic supporters and designers have been on the move to raise money for President Obama's re-election campaign. In this new couture fundraiser called "Runway to Win," top names have been involved in making re-election a fashionable possibility.
Famous names like Vera Wang, Jason Wu, Beyonce and Tina Knowles, Rachel Roy, and Marc Jacobs have work included in a collection of patriotic, Obama-advertising apparel. This bold yet creative move from the Obama campaign has not been received positively from all parties. A writer at the "The Washington Post" called it "blandly patriotic" and "uninspired." However, Meaghan Burdick, marketing and merchandise director for the Obama campaign, had a different view to share.
"We had such a fantastic response to the Runway to Change event in 2008, when we re-approached the designers who supported the initiative last time, they signed off on making another collection right away."
Clothing and accessories are moderately priceed between $45-$95 and can be purchased online. So, will people buy? Here are some comments from Twitter:
"So Obama has a designer section called 'Runway to win' by people like Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Beyonce+Russel Simmons.. He's so cool!!!"
"I'd like that "runway to win" shirt a lot more if it wasn't white. Black, red, Blue, or even gray. But white? Ehh."
"I feel like theres better things this clothing line could benefit than a pol campaign"
"Designer politics. Looks like NYC fashion week is a part ofObama's re-election campaign. But DWF or Marc Jacobs might loose some customers."
