'Brave' Singer Sara Bareilles, ‘True Colors’ Hit Maker Cyndi Lauper Team With ‘Today’ Anchor Hoda Kotb For Cancer With 'Truly Brave' Song: WATCH

Singer-songwriters Sara Bareilles and Cyndi Lauper recently collaborated with "Today" host Hoda Kotb for a project for the benefit of the American Cancer Society and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, The Examiner reported.

As part of "Today's" "Shine a Light" campaign to raise money for pediatric cancer research, the project was led by Kotb, who is a cancer survivor herself, Today reported.

"You know how your life is perfect on Monday and then on Tuesday it all falls apart? That's what happened to me seven years ago when a doctor called me and told me I had breast cancer. I needed a mastectomy- and reconstruction. An excruciating time," Kotb wrote on Crowd Rise.

"I thank God that I have wonderful doctors, family, friends and faith that helped me through, but I also had something else- music. Sounds funny but those notes and lyrics soothed me and helped heal me. I am not sure what I would have done without it," she also wrote.

Mashing Lauper's hit song "True Colors" and Bareilles' song "Brave," the "Truly Brave" video was launched on Sept. 25.

Recently, Lauper visited "Today" and talked to hosts Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford about the project, which has raised almost $360,000.

"We were lucky that it worked. I didn't know it was going to work. How could you say no to those kids?" Lauper said referring to the cancer-stricken children who appeared on their collaborative video project, which has reached almost one million views on YouTube.

"You know how it is when you meet stars, and sometimes it doesn't turn out, because they're not what you think," said Lauper who had nothing but praises for Bareilles. "She's a good kid."

Lauper also talked about her Broadway show "Kinky Boots," which she described as "a show that makes everybody happy" as "everyone can find themselves somewhere in there, because it's about all kinds of people."
