The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has long sought to preserve the culture in the Garment District; however, WWD reports they will be moving out of the neighborhood- red flags went up on this call.
At the current location at 1412 Broadway, they have settled there for 15 years to be replaced by an office in Noho at Bleecker Street.
To some people, they're worried CFDA has lost their focus on mainting the Garment district. Nanette Lepore feels the decision to leave the neighborhood is a big no-no. She states, "We are extremely disappointed by the CFDA's decision to leave the Garment Center. We only hope this does not signal the end of their previous support for New York City manufacturing and emerging American designers."
CFDA CEO Steven Kolb wants to reassure everyone that it has nothing to do with not wanting to support the preservation of the Garment District. He explains, "Right now, if you look around, we are busting out of the seams. We can't have any significant meetings here. Given the fact our lease is up next year and we have outgrown it, we started looking." Kolb adds primarily they "look heavily here" in the beginning and that many Garment District buildings were considered "significantly" in their search.
Diane von Furstenberg, CFDDA's president, comes from a different vantage point. She added: "We found a great space with a great deal, and that's that." Although to alleviate people's concern she did mention that CFDA will be expanding factories in the Garment District. Hope still remains for the preservation to continue.
