On its 40th season, "Saturday Night Live" will have a new anchor for the "Weekend Update" portion as confirmed by NBC Thursday, Boston Herald reported.

Replacing Cecily Strong, "The Daily Show" correspondent Michael Che will join the "Weekend Update" anchor desk opposite Colin Just, who joined Strong on the desk halfway through the previous season.

Last season, Strong and Just tackled the "Weekend Update" desk as "SNL" writer Seth Meyers moved to the "Late Night" show in February.

In April, Che was a writer for "SNL" when he was hired to be a "Daily Show" correspondent, Mediaite reported.

The new season of "SNL" will premiere on Sept. 27, which will be hosted by "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Chris Pratt featuring a performance by "Break Free" hit maker Ariana Grande.

Strong, on the other hand, will be given more exposure in other "SNL" skits.

Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz has recently claimed "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels could be jailed if the Democrats' proposed constitutional amendment known as S.J. Res. 19 would be enacted.

Criticizing the proposed amendment, Cruz claimed overturning the Supreme Court's "Citizens United" threatens First Amendment protections that date back more than two centuries in his speech on Sept. 9, Tuesday, PolitiFact reported.

According to Cruz, he asked the senator from Minnesota Al Franken who is a former "SNL" writer and actor in Senate Judiciary Committee if he believes "Congress should have the constitutional authority to prohibit 'Saturday Night Live' from making fun of politicians."

"The good senator promptly reassured me he had no intention of doing any such thing," Cruz said referring to Franken. "But what we are debating in the intentions of 100 senators. What we are debating is a constitutional amendment that 49 Democrats are proposing to be inserted into the Bill of Rights."

"Well, NBC, which airs 'Saturday Night Live,' is a corporation, Congress would have the power to make it a criminal offense. Lorne Michaels could be put in jail under this amendment for making fun of any politician," Cruz explained.
