Jamie Blackley is Chloe Grace Moretz's love interest in the new drama film "If I Stay," and the 23-year-old Manx actor recently said during a publicity tour stop in Toronto that his first screen chemistry test with the actress immediately gave way to friendship, Toronto Sun reported.

"I just remember being so scared and so nervous. And then throughout the process [of the screen chemistry test] we just kind of messed around and became friends," said Blackley who plays Adam, a confident yet vulnerable budding rock star and boyfriend of high school student and cello virtuoso Mia (Moretz).

"She just made it so easy," the "Snow White and the Huntsman" actor said of her 17-year-old co-star. "I think the only way to portray that young love is to just be mates with each other and just mess around. Hopefully that comes across."

"We made sure we didn't take ourselves too seriously and that helped a lot," added the Blackley, according to Postmedia News.

But before landing the role, Blackley revealed that he initially refused to audition for the part.

"I couldn't get a job back home for ages," explained Blackley, according to The Canadian Press. "So when I got sent the script, I looked at the email and I just ignored it basically. I just thought there's no point because I'm not going to get it anyway, so ignored it for weeks and weeks."

But eventually, after a bit of nudging, he recorded an audition tape and screen tested with Moretz.

The film, however, is a lot more than just young love.

In the R.J. Cutler-directed flick, which is based on Gayle Forman's young adult novel of the same name, Mia thinks that the hardest decision she would ever face would be whether to pursue her musical dreams at Juilliard or follow a different path to be with her rebellious boyfriend, Adam. But one day, Mia and her family get into a terrible car accident that takes the lives of her mother Kat (Mireille Enos), her father Denny (Joshua Leonard), and her little brother Teddy (Jakob Davies).

While she lies in a coma, she has an out-of-body experience and must decide if she should wake up and continue living without her beloved family, or slip away and die.

"If I Stay" opens in theaters Friday, Aug. 22.
