Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are determined to be parents first when it comes to their relationship. The couple has two children together, Harlow and Sparrow, but will not divorce as their parents did before them.

The reality star opened up to Oprah about how parenting is "the easiest and hardest part" of their marriage.

"We met and we were partners from day one," Richie explained.

"And from the second we found out we were going to be parents together, we looked at each other and we said, 'Okay, both of our parents are divorced."'

"We both have had ups and downs with our parents, and we don't really have a strong example of what a healthy family life is. But, we're recognizing that now, so let's work at it and let's go through this together as a team," she continued.

"It's been great. And I would say that's the easiest and hardest part."

Richie further opened up about motherhood, and how she feels is best to handle her children.

"I have to always come from a place of love and compassion with them," she told the host.

"My kids operate best when I let them have a voice. I really explain things to them, because really, kids want to be told the truth. They just do. They just want you to be truthful."

"They can feel it and they know you. And they know you more than you know yourself."

Richie recently spoke with Andy Cohen about setting up brother-in-law Benji Madden with friend Cameron Diaz.

A fan asked Richie if she played matchmaker in the newfound relationship, to which she replied, "Yes. I'm going to take responsibility for everything!"

She continued, "I approve of anything that's going to make Benji happy."

"I am a devoted sister-in-law. I'm happy for anyone who is happy, and I want everyone to be surrounded with love."
