It looks like a new list titled, "The Most Important Acts in Black and Urban Music," created by BBC 1 Xtra has caused quite a stir among musicians in the urban music industry after Ed Sheeran landed the number one spot.

According to Entertainment Wise, not only did the "Sing" artist top the list but three out of the top four artists who landed the best spots are white.

Ed Sheeran has rose to fame with his unique blend of folk and hip hop however many artists, most notably rapper Wiley went on a Twitter rant slamming the list.

Wiley called the chart "the saddest list in music history." The artist who came 16th on the list tweeted, "Not taking anything away from Ed. He is sick. But black artists in England, we are getting bumped... We influence a man and all of a sudden it turns he has influenced us."

He went on to say, "England music industry is backwards."

In an effort to justify the list a BBC spokesman explained, "Artists were considered on variables such as sales statistics, quality of music and impact across the wider industry - it is not about the colour of someone's skin."

Music manager at 1Xtra, Austin Daboh added, "We are a station that cares very deeply about black music. From Stylo G to Fekky these are all acts that were played, supported and guided by 1Xtra, often before anyone else cared.

"There is definitely a wider debate to be had around the mainstream support for black music. Legitimate concerns have been raised around the pressure some artists feel to compete commercially."
