It looks like Zendaya will not be playing Aaliyah after all. The 17-year-old Disney star has dropped out of the Lifetime Aaliyah biopic movie, both her rep and Twitter account confirmed the news on Sunday, June 29th.
According to Us Weekly, Bella Thorne's pal's official Twitter account tweeted, "Aaliyah has always been a source of inspiration to Zendaya," adding, "She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her. If she is going to do it, she wants to do it right."
Lifetime also tweeted about her decision to drop out of the biopic. The network tweeted, "We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold." For now that is all the information that has been revealed about the big decision to drop out of the movie.
News that Zendaya would be playing Aaliyah was announced earlier this month and the "Dancing With the Stars" contestant was hit with a ton of backlash about portraying the late R&B singer.
Some commentators complained that her skin was too light to play Baby Girl while others didn't think she was up to the challenging role.
Following the announcement, Zendaya took to her Twitter account on June 16th to explain her decision to take on the role.
The "Shake It Up" starlet tweeted, "She's been an inspiration and influence in my whole career, her talent still shines brighter then ever, all I wanna do is honor her," adding, "Show how much she accomplished in only 22 years....she's beautiful inside and there will never be another Aaliyah, I just hope to share her beautiful story, and make her proud up in heaven #babygirl #forever #OneInAMillion."
