'Shake It Up!' Star Zendaya Coleman Says She Is Right Fit For Aaliyah Role

We told you yesterday Zendaya Coleman will play Aaliyah in an upcoming Lifetime biopic, tentatively titled "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B," based off Christopher Farley's best-selling novel, "Aaliyah: More Than A Woman." Many were not happy with the casting choice, but Coleman is taking the heat in stride.

"I'm a huge Aaliyah fan. I do NOT want Zendaya Coleman playing Aaliyah in a upcoming movie," twitter user @blackgoddess93 wrote.

"Zendaya doesn't even resemble aaliyah what is this foolishness," @vixzayn agreed.

Aaliyah found home at the top of the charts from 1994 until she passed away in 2001 at 22. Coleman is a promising choice for the part; aside from her strong acting skills, she released a self-titled album in 2013 where the first single sold over a million copies.

The upcoming biopic is being brought on by Aaliyah Productions, Inc., with executive producers Howard Braunstein (The Informant!) and Debra Martin Chase (The Princess Diaries). Bradley Walsh (Turn the Beat Around) will direct from a Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar) script.

The Disney star assured she is right for the part, and will not let fans of the late singer down.

"She's been an inspiration and influence in my whole career, her talent still shines brighter (than) ever, all I wanna do is honor her," Coleman tweeted.

"Show how much she accomplished in only 22 years....she's beautiful inside and there will never be another Aaliyah, I just hope to share her beautiful story, and make her proud up in heaven #babygirl #forever #OneInAMillion.

Coleman has accomplished a great deal since stardom, this year alone receiving two NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding New Artist and Outstanding Performance in a Youth/Children's Program (series or special) from "Shake It Up!" She also won two Radio Disney Music Awards for Breakout Artist of the Year and Artist with the Best Style.
