Most women reaching menopausal stage may encounter thinning of hair along the top of the head. FPHL or female-pattern hair loss is also called Androgenetic Alopecia in medical terms. This kind of hair loss happens when estrogen decrease during menopause.

According to WebMD, female-pattern hair loss may occur for women at the age of 50 or 60. But FPHL may also appear during the teenage years due to genetics.


Hairstyles

Women tend to have different hairstyles from birth to adulthood. Other hairstyles trigger the roots of the hair, like tight ponytails. Braids and cornrows hairstyle tends to pull the roots of the hair.

Harmful hair dyes, chemical treatments, blow dryers, and flat irons can all cause hair damage. Hair damage and breakage due to different hairstyles may also result in hair loss.

Aggressive hairstyles that may result in hair loss to women is Traction Alopecia. This type of hair loss happens where hair follicles get damaged and can be permanent as well.


Extreme Stress or Shock to the Body

Severe stress-related activities that a woman may experience can cause temporary hair loss. Women who experience traumatic experience or events that shock the body is susceptible to hair loss. Rapid changes in the body like weight loss, surgeries, and giving birth can bring hair loss to women as well.

Telogen Effluvium is the medical term related to this type of hair loss. Women who encounter physical trauma may experience weeks or six months of hair loss before it recovers.


Toxic Substances

Women who undergo chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other forms of medications may cause sudden hair loss. The toxic substances that entered the body may start permanent damage to the hair follicle. Anagen Effluvium happens when hair loss is due to medications and toxic substances.


Autoimmune Diseases

Most individuals that suffer from health problems like diabetes and arthritis have a weak immune system. A lower immune system may trigger the body to not have proper nutrients and leads to hair loss. Alopecia Areata is a result of a weak immune system and affects the hair follicles leading to hair loss.

Though individuals who encounter loss of hair due to illness may recover hair texture but differ from the normal hair.

2. Discovering patches of missing hair around your head. The common part where patches are possible is on the top of your head.
