Nicole Kidman Blames Her Luxurious Ring For Awkward Clap At 89th Academy Awards

Since the 2017 Oscar ceremony, Hollywood star Nicole Kidman had been a laughingstock in social media for her bizarre clapping style. But she blamed it on her expensive jewelry. In an Australian radio interview given to Kyle and Jackie O on March 8, the 49-year-old actress explained that she wore a Harry Winston ring on her finger, making it difficult for her to clap.

As reported by US Magazine, the "Lion" star was afraid of damaging the luxurious ornament, which resulted in this awkward clapping moment. "It was really awkward. I was like, 'I want to clap, I don't want to be, not clapping - it would be worst'," said the star. "Everyone will think 'Why Nicole isn't clapping.' Thus, I clapped, but it was very difficult due to the huge ring, which wasn't mine. Although it was extremely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it," said the actress.

According to News 18, even though her explanation makes a perfect sense, the damage was already done, where lots of fans flooded Twitter with funny memes of her applauding and compared it to a seal flapping its flippers. It certainly went on to become one of the most infamous moments at the 89th Academy Awards, including the wrong announcement of the Best Picture Award.

The Australian native later commented that she was shocked when her seal clapping moment became a major talking point among the people, which, according to her, was weird. "There are more important things that need to be focused on instead of my seal clap," The "Big Little Lies" star added, reports Huffington Post.

When asked about the wicked mishap of "La La Land" and "Moonlight" Best Picture announcement, she said she first thought someone was ill when people rushed on stage. "It was quite bizarre, they were shuffling envelopes and people rushing on stage. I was like 'What's going on?'"

Her movie "Lion" was nominated in for six categories, although it came empty handed.
