Avril Lavigne Talks Struggle With Lyme Disease: ‘I Thought I Was Dying, I Was Scared For My Life’

Avril Lavigne was diagnosed with a severe case Lyme disease, a health illness she has been battling against for months now.

According to the "Complicated" singer, she began feeling ill in April but the doctors she consulted said she was just dehydrated and exhausted from touring, ABC News reported.

"I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move," Lavigne told People in an exclusive interview. "I thought I was dying."

As the disease became more severe, the French-Canadian songwriter said that there were times she couldn't shower for a full week because she could barely stand. She was bedridden for five months.

"I never had depression, but being sick and being so terrified that in itself is depressing," she told People. "I was scared for my life."

Lavigne, who decided to stay in Ontario during her recovery, revealed that the support she got from her mom, who moved in to take care of her, was overwhelming. Meanwhile, Lavigne's husband, Chad Kroeger, made sure to check in during breaks from his Nickelback tours.

According to New York Daily News, Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria contracted from infected black-legged ticks.

The singer believed that she was bitten by a tick sometime last spring, E! News learned.

Since her diagnosis, the platinum-selling singer has completely changed her lifestyle by eating the right diet and exercising.

The "Sk8er Boy" singer also revealed that she's 80 percent better and that she's ready to move forward. Part of this move is her new single, "Fly," which will be released this April in support of the 2015 Special Olympics.

"This is a wake-up call," Lavigne said, concluding her interview with People. "I really just want to enjoy life from here on out."
