This week we honor classic beauty, Judy Garland, as our Thursday Throwback.

A Hollywood legend, Judy Garland is cinematic royalty. This Minnesota native was born with the talent to entertain, performing at the tender young age of just two! The aspiring star began her career by performing with her older sisters, but would quickly go solo, landing one of her biggest movie roles at only 17. Garland would sing, dance and act her way into the hearts of millions with her portrayal of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.

While she may be best known for this iconic role, Garland's gorgeous beauty and star power graced many more films. Her signature smile and always-perfect hair and makeup epitomized the golden age of old Hollywood glamour. But growing up in front of the camera made it hard for Judy to realize her killer good looks. Luckily thanks to a makeup artist would become her longtime stylist, the young starlet was able to see just how beautiful she was.

At the age of 21 and filming the movie Meet Me in St. Louis, Garland worked with makeup artist Dotty Ponedel. Feeling insecure about her looks, Judy showed Ponedel the caps she used for her teeth and nose inserts she used to alter her appearance. "You don't need all this junk," Dotty told Garland. "You're a pretty girl. Let's see what we can do."

Ponedel helped to reveal Garland's true beauty. "I raised her eyebrows a bit, and gave her a fuller lower lip," said Ponedel. "I put on a makeup base that was pretty to the eye. I knew it would be pretty to the camera too. I tweezed out some of the hairline." The work was minimal, but the effect was stunning. Garland would stick to a minimal makeup style from there on out.

Focusing on flawlessly smooth and even skin with defied eyes, soft cheeks, and eyes, Judy kept her makeup palette simple and natural. Where Garland did go glam was with her lashes and lips. With a pair of falsies and her classic shade of eye-popping red lip color, Judy's simplistic swag was classy, sophisticated and head turning. Judy clearly key what trends would always be timeless, as nude makeup and a red lip are still in and always of the moment.
