The couple made their way around the event greeting a group of wildlife conservationists and had a brief chat with Gabon President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

The president asked the pair about their son, who is still making national headlines. William told Ondimba, "We've left him at home for the first time."

The inquiring mind was also curious to know who the child favored in the looks department. Kate replied and said, "Like most babies, he's got a mix of both of us."

After mingling, the couple headed into the exclusive reception to meet award winners and then made their way into the dining room which featured, ten tables decorated with flowers that accommodated between 8 and 10 people. Not to mention that each place setting featured a gift box from Tiffany & Co.

Us Weekly reported that Prince William took his seat next to Ondimba, while Middleton sat next to his wife, Sylvia. The meal severed consisted of a tomato consomme with celeriac custard and spiced avocado puree for the starter, and Elwy Valley Lamb for the main course.

William addressed the crowd with a speech and threw in a joke about him and his wife's new parenting status.

He said, "As you might have gathered, Catherine and I have recently become proud parents -- of a baby who has a voice to match any lion's roar!"

He added, "This is actually our first evening out without him, so please excuse us if you see us nervously casting cheeky glances at our mobile phone to check all is well back home."

However, despite nervous fidgets the royal couple seemed to enjoy their night out. An eyewitness said, "Kate was still smiling and waved to a few members of the public waiting on the pavement as their car pulled away."
