One of our favorite beauty hybrids is the makeup crayon. Lips, cheeks, eyes, face, these little guys have got it all covered. But if you're hesitant to try these pint-sized pigments, fear not! We've tapped our resident makeup artist, Mayli Hernandez, and she's given us a fabulous beauty breakdown. Learn all there is you need to know about these colorful crayons below.

What are makeup crayons? Are these strictly for makeup pros, or can an amateur use them?
Makeup crayons are chubby little handhelds that make touchups and applying color fast and fun. At first, we saw more of this in the form of eyeshadows, but the new lip crayons are now also very popular. Anyone can use makeup crayons. The application is quick and easy, much like a lipstick. Just know your shades and what will work on you. A light hue will give lips a complimentary balmy look. Darker shades are for bringing on the drama!

What makes makeup crayons so great?  How versatile are they?
This is what I love most about these crayons. They're great because it takes the guesswork out of trying to master professional makeup artist's techniques. What's even better is these products are affordable and many brands carry their own special take on this unique innovation. For example Covergirl's Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm offers a great range of shades that keep lips soft and nourished. From nudes to vibrant livid colors, these crayons are a steal at $7.

What tips, tricks, or techniques do you recommend for using this type of product?
Well let's talk about lips. If you're going for a subtle look, use a makeup crayon and try this application technique: Simply tap the crayon gently onto your lips and smooth it out. This is a great way to achieve an everyday look. If you are aiming for a more dramatic night look, apply a lip liner close to the same shade as your makeup crayon. Fill in your lips with the liner and then apply the makeup crayon on top. It will truly make the color pop and last all evening long.

What looks work best with lip and eye crayons?
I personally like to do more of an everyday look with this product. An average woman these days needs go-to products that get her ready fast, quick, and in a hurry. My day leaves little time for any real kind of major beauty prep time, so I keep a crayon handy to get me ready and keep my regime super simple. I like a bronzy soft, smoky eye and a rosy pink shade for the lips. That works best for me. I love a sun-kissed look.

What brands do you love and recommend?  Why?

I love Clinique for their makeup crayons. They have a fabulous variety of different shades. The Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm is loaded with mango and shea butters, perfect for dry lips. The collection comes in sixteen lip tints, each with a subtle sheen. The Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes are great too. They're sheer, creamy, and last. You can wear them alone or contour with another to add depth and highlight. Try them for $17 a pop.

Don't forget there are some great foundation crayons out there too! L'Oreal's True Match Super-Blendable Crayon Concealer is a great way to cover up eyes without getting fingers messy. For $9, this crayon allows for precise application, while the side of it can easily canvas a larger area of skin.

What colors should we all snag for our makeup bags for both the end of summer and fall?
Regardless of the season, we should all have a red shade for either summer or fall. Pink and nudes also can work for both seasons. Of all the very many shades you will have to choose from, definitely pick up these two colors. They are always in and you can do multiple looks with these classic shades.
