Taking care of your hair seems like something that is easy to do, but a lot of things you do to your hair are more damaging than beneficial.

Chances are you've done at least one of these things (and we have, too; don't worry, we don't judge). But it's never too late to change your habits. It might take some time, but you've got this.

Here are some hair habits you're going to want to avoid moving forward.

Pulling your hair back tightly

We're so sorry to tell you that pulling your hair back in a tight ponytail, bun, braids or even cornrows can damage your hair. Although you look super cute with your hair styled like this, continuing to pull your hair tightly can actually cause breakage in your hair. You can still style your hair this way, but try to be less tight with it. Haircare brand Milkshake said this also reigns true for styling your hair in braids and ponytails while wet.

Shampooing your hair the wrong way

Yes, there is actually a right and wrong way to shampoo your hair. We hate to break it to you, but you actually shouldn't be washing your hair every single day. It can help strip your hair of the natural oils that you need. Additionally, you should be washing your hair by gently massaging your shampoo into your scalp, not just at the length.

Brushing and towel-drying hair when wet

When your hair is wet, that is when it's most fragile, so you need to make sure you take extra care when drying your hair. Sqeezing, towel drying, and even brushing can lead to damage, according to Alterna Haircare. These actions can damage your hair cuticles and increase frizz.

Overbrushing your hair

It sounds crazy, but you can actually overbrush your hair. Multiple experts say you are not supposed to brush your hair non-stop. If you overbrush your hair, it can cause breakage and split ends. If you brush your hair a lot, Milkshake suggests using leave-in treatment so your hair strength can remain.

Using excessive heat styling

Even if you do use heat protection, your hair can still get damaged from heat. We're not just talking about straightening; we're talking about blow-drying, curling, and more.

According to Dyson, some signs of heat damage are dullness, dryness, split ends, breakage, frizziness, flyaways, tangles, changed texture, and even hair loss.
