Whether short or long nails, people have many options for manicures nowadays. Those who want to wear long nails often go for press-ons or acrylics, but there's another alternative offered at nail salons: gel extensions.

This technique is a different version of acrylics nails. Gel is used to form the nail shape and then filed to the finish of your choice.

The gel extension process begins with placing a paper form first to get the desired shape and length and then building the gel above this to create the nails you want. The nail tech will cure the nail between each layer of gel before filing it to the perfect the shape.

Like other gel nails, this technique also requires exposing the nails to UV light to harden the gel.

Gel extensions can last between two to four weeks. The duration depends on various factors, including nail care and the skill of the technician.

It's recommended to hydrate your nails with oils after getting the manicure. In general, it's important to keep your nails healthy by applying nail oils on your cuticles, keeping them moisturized and strong.

Before you get excited and book an appointment for gel extensions, learn about the different types first to determine your preference.

Hard gel is non-porous and acetone-resistant and can be filed into different shapes. Due to its acetone resistance, removing it can be difficult, usually requiring filing. This type of extension offers a lot of durability and strength. It is non-scented, unlike acrylic nails, which can have a strong smell that isn't appealing to many people.

Unlike hard gel, soft gel is porous, so it can be soaked off with acetone during removal. It is also completely clear and can be shaped into any style and length. Like hard gel, it needs UV light to dry.

When the time comes for removal, similar tools to those used for regular gel nails are employed. Professionals gently file the gel extensions down to remove some of the thickness, making sure to avoid damaging the natural nails. Once filed, the rest is soaked off with acetone. A cotton ball soaked in acetone can be placed on the nails before they are wrapped in foil.

Gel nail extensions are recommended for those who want to grow out their nails, as they can provide protection against weak or brittle nails.
