South Korean cosmetics giant Amorepacific has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based skin diagnosis system called Dr. Amore.

Dr. Amore is designed to use AI to instantly diagnose common skin problems such as pores, pigmentation, red spots, and wrinkles, from photos.

The system's deep learning AI was trained on clinical expert evaluations and images of Korean women's facial skin.

Amorepacific's Research and Innovation Center conducted a study utilizing Dr. Amore and was able to observe trends on skin aging.

"We assessed the system's precision and sensitivity by analyzing the correlation between the diagnoses by the AI system and those of the experts," the company's researchers wrote in the paper.

To evaluate the changes in various facial skin characteristics with aging, the system analyzed facial images of 120 Korean girls and women whose ages ranged from 10 to 60

The study suggested that the most significant skin changes happen to women in the 20s and 30s age group.

Specifically, it found that wrinkles and pigmentation "changed significantly" for women in their 20s and 30s, while pores "increased significantly" between the ages of 10 and 20.

The paper, titled "Development and application of artificial intelligence-based facial skin image diagnosis system," was published on Dec. 12 in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, a prestigious academic journal that publishes studies related to cosmetics and skin.

Amorepacific is the parent company of some of the most successful and popular South Korean beauty brands, including Laneige, Innisfree, CosRx, Sulwhasoo, and Etude House.

The company houses over 30 beauty, personal care and health brands. It is regarded as one of the top cosmetics conglomerates not just in South Korea but also in the world.

Forbes named Amorepacific one of the world's 100 most innovative companies.

Last month, its Lipcure Beam technology, another diagnosis system, won the Consumer Electronics Show 2024 Innovation award, marking the company's fifth consecutive win at the worldwide tech event.
