Scar formation is a result of a biological process in skin after an injury or trauma. It is formed when the dermis layer of the skin is damaged. It is our body's way to repair tissues and organs and is a natural part of the healing process. A scar tissue is composed of the same type of collagen it is replacing with. Scars lacks elasticity compared to normal tissue.  There are different degrees of scarring depending on the injury the tissue is subjected to.


What are the different types of scars?

Keloid

Keloids are scars that are raised. They grow larger than the original size of injury. Keloids sometimes show up 3 months after the injury and may continue to form in years. It may vary from one person to another. Some are keloid formers wherein they grow larger keloid scars compared to other individuals. 

Keloids may vary in color and may appear red, pink or purple. It gets darker in time and is usually shades darker than the original skin color of the person. The border is darker than the center and will grow raised in a flat surface. Some keloids are soft, others would appear hard. When keloids form, the person will experience itching and tenderness and sometimes pain on the side when touched. It can grow anywhere on the body like the shoulders, neck, chest, abdomen and ears. 

Skin injuries like cuts, injection sites, chicken pox, insect bites, acne, tattoos and piercings can form keloids. And some people are more likely to form them, such as  teenagers, Latinos, Asians, pregnant women, and those younger than 30 years of age. 

Keloids can be subjected to treatments to lessen their visibility in the skin. Treatments may vary in the form of laser therapies, surgical removal, corticosteroid shots, cryotherapy, pressurized treatment to reduce blood flow in the area, or silicone sheets or gel will help to flatten keloids.
