Former White Stripes frontman and guitarist Jack White lashed out against a number of artists and celebrities, as well as the magazine Rolling Stone, at a Boston show on Wednesday, Rolling Stone reports.
Among the artists he lambasted is rock band Foo Fighters, who he said have three guitarists just to conceal mistakes during shows, according to Spin. He said he himself employs a "second guitar player playing the same parts I play so in case I make I mistake, he's still playing it for you."
He then went on to attack Rolling Stone.
"Something for Rollingstone.com for tomorrow," he began. "I like to feed them something every day for their clickbait," White said, referencing the headlines and stories he alleges the magazine uses to get more visits.
"If everyone could, in this whole stadium, please go to Rollingstone.com tomorrow. They've paid me zero dollars to plug them so make sure they get at least a million mouse clicks tomorrow," he said.
"That number again, Rollingtone.com, brought to you by the Kardashian family," White continued, suggesting that the magazine, primarily a rock, culture and politics publication, is riding on the socialite family's tabloid-chronicled popularity to draw in website visitors.
He proceeded to enumerate headlines he purported were published by the magazine.
"Fifteen outfits that will blow your mind that Taylor Swift wore this month," he said. "Ten reasons why Rollingstone.com didn't cover Newport Folk Festival for 50 straight years. Twelve reasons Rolling Stone won't put a black-and-white cover on the cover of their magazine unless you're dead!" he went on.
While Rolling Stone did not refute the musician's claims on the Kardashians or Taylor Swift, it contested the other titles he listed down. The magazine said it has covered the festival in question extensively and provided a link to a black-and-white 2010 cover photo of Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.
White, who has been performing as a solo artist since the White Stripes disbanded, spoke out against singers who habitually lip-sync earlier in his rant.
"Most performers don't use microphones anymore. Ninety percent of proper singers don't use microphones that have cords on them," he said.
Toward the end of his monologue, he admitted his denouncements were reminiscent of rapper Kanye West's onstage rants.
A few hours after the concert, Jack white's camp issued a statement on what happened, Pitch Fork reports.
"Dear dream-makers of the media, Last night Jack White made a joke on stage!" it said. "There was a minor equipment mishap, specifically with his guitar, and in an effort to keep his audience engaged, he made a joke!"
"It was meant to be funny... Jack has the utmost respect for the Foo Fighters and communicated with Grohl this morning," the management said. "All is well in the rock and roll world."
