Katie Holmes will make her directorial debut with mother-daughter drama "All We Had," an adaptation of Annie Weatherwax's first novel of the same name.

The 35-year-old actress, who is best known for her role as Joey Potter on The WB television teen drama "Dawson's Creek" optioned "All We Had" in July and Scribner published the book on Aug. 5. "All We Had" follows the story of a mother and her 13-year-old daughter, living on the edge of poverty, who find an unlikely home amid the quirky residents of small town America, Variety reported.

"I am very excited and honored to be collaborating with Jane and Josh on this project and look so forward to bringing Annie's incredible characters to the screen," said Holmes in a statement.

Josh Boone, director of the 2014 hit teen cancer drama "Fault in Our Stars," will write the script. Tribeca Prods. partner Jane Rosenthal ("About A Boy," "Little Fockers") has signed on to produce along with VP Production Berry Welsh and Holmes, according to Deadline.

"Katie has such a clear vision for the book's irreverent, original mother-daughter relationship," Rosenthal added in the statement. "Her passion for the material, along with Josh Boone's ability to tell stories grounded in the comedy and drama of everyday, will truly bring these characters to life."

Meanwhile, "Top Gun 2," an upcoming movie of Holmes' former husband Tom Cruise, is currently in negotiations with Justin Marks, the writer of Disney' forthcoming  live-action version of "The Jungle Book,"The Hollywood Reporter reported.

"Top Gun 2," which is the sequel to the 1986 Tony Scott-directed action drama film, is being made by Paramount and Skydance. Cruise is set to reprise his role as ace pilot LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in a story that has a mission to show the significance of good old fashioned pilots in the present's day high-tech, drone-centric war environment.

Skydance's Dana Goldberg is exec producing alongside Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Skydance's David Ellison of is also producing.
