In the spirit of New York Fashion Week, staring at the perfect postured models walking up and down the runways got us thinking.

Just how do you get perfect posture? What's the secret? What are the bad habits? And of course, which celebs have the best and worst postures in Tinseltown?

We decided to tap Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, spine specialist and author of Keys to an Amazing Life: Secrets of the Cervical Spine, to get the 411 on how to walk every sidewalk like a model on the catwalk. Check out what he had to tell us:

So Dr. Hansraj, why is having good posture so important?

Remember your mother saying "Stop slouching"? You would think it goes without saying, but too many of us simply don't maintain good posture, which is critical for a healthy spine. Good posture is defined as ears aligned with the shoulders and the "angel wings," or the shoulder blades, retracted. In proper alignment, spinal stress is diminished. It is the most efficient position to achieve the best posture possible.

Poor posture has health and wellness consequences. Researchers at San Francisco State University
have found a link between poor posture and depression, and many experts believe stooping and slouching could be associated with weight gain, heartburn, migraines, anxiety and respiratory conditions.

Proper posture leads to a taller appearance, deeper breathing, improved well-being and increased energy with enhanced human performance.

When should we begin to worry about our posture?

Start as a child! Parents influence their children be reminding them to stand straight and to stop slouching. As adults it is important to be mindful of our posture daily. Years of poor posture can develop into potential serious and irreversible damage.

What kind of habits cause poor posture?

A few habits can cause poor posture. Many times today we are found in an electronic world. Computers, digital phones, iPads, and all sorts of electronic gadgets incursions to keep our next down looking at the screen. This position has properly defined as forposture.

Most of our work, sports and personal world is spent in the forward posture position and people without training are not aware that they are increasing the forces about their neck and back.

It does not matter how fashionable your outfit is, or what size your wear, if your head is down and shoulders are rounded forward you will not look your best!
