Buyer beware! Hair extensions alert!

Hair extensions are one of the most popular ways to achieve long locks, fullness, experiment with color, or keep your hair ever changing without damaging your actual tresses...or so one young woman thought.

We've covered the dangers of hair extensions, such as traction alopecia. This story, however, proves there's even more to be leary of when it comes to extension wearing.

One of the biggest downsides to hair extensions is the cost. With the price for hair reaching into the thousands, many opt for cheaper deals on the black market.

Channel 7 News reports that 22-year-old college student Brittney Dever decided like many women to get a hair weave put in. Her pictures after the installation of the hair reveal a great look for just $60, and at the time, a satisfied customer.

Cut to two weeks later, however, and Brittney's extensions soon tuned into a hair nightmare.

"Two weeks later, I was lying down, and there was blood on my pillow," Devers said. She then attempted to remove the hair and had a grizzly discovery.

"It smelled horrible. I was nauseous when I was taking my hair out," said Devers. The young woman had a serious infection an abscess on her head.

Devers immediately sought the help of a professional. Now partially bald, her hair might never be the same.

"I was just in shock when I saw her picture," said Natural Resources Salon owner Tamika Fletcher.

"It seemed like the weave was pulled too tight, opening and exposing her scalp. I think there could have been a possibility of the utensils being unclean or unsanitary."

Dever's experience has caused her to speak out to warn others of the potential downsides to black market hair and too-good-to-be-true prices for installation.

"Go to a salon, that's sanitary, that's clean. It's worth spending the extra money because you get what you pay for. Going to someone's home to get the extra service may not be the best idea. You can end up losing instead of gaining," Dever said.
